Introduction #
Tire Sizes are always a topic of discussion, particularly if you have changed your wheels. However, even with original wheels, the change from bias ply tires to radials means you’re not likely to be replacing like with like.
Kelvin Dodd of Moss Motors produced this article on tire sizes for their British Motoring magazine. I often provide this to anyone that asks about what tire sizes they can/should get. I’ve made this material available here for ease of access but copyright belongs to Moss Motors.
Tire Sizes – Key Points for the MGB – 14 Inch Wheels #
The recommendations from the article are shown in the table below. Note that these suggestions will give a diameter as close to the original tires as possible. This also has the added benefit of keeping the speedometer as close to accurate as possible.
MGB & Wheel Type | Suggested Radial Tire Size(s) |
---|---|
Early MGB with 4 inch steel wheel | 155/80R14 or 165/80R14 |
MGB with wire wheels | 165/80R14 or 175/70R14 |
MGB with RoStyle 5 inch wheels | 175/70R14 or 185/70R14 |
MGB with 5.5 inch alloy wheels (LE) | 185/70R14 or 195/65R14 ** |

I’ve built this website and spent time on the knowledge base to bring together a lot of information I have collected from around the internet. The intent is making it easy to find rather than having to know about and have skills with search engine query terms to get what you were looking for. Please make use of the knowledge base.
