Background #
Steering Wheel Removal on an MGB can/could be a complete nightmare. I have been lucky that on both occasions I have needed to do this, it’s been relatively easy.
I recently witnessed where this can seem like the impossible! During the MG 2022 North American MGB Register (NAMGBR) convention in Peterborough ON an attendee wanted to do this. They planned to repair/replace a turn signal (indicator) switch. The car came through the line in John Twist’s rolling Tech Session. John did it!
Overview #
The process is to gain access to the main nut that holds the steering wheel on the steering column. Remove the horn button or center badge as applicable. Then loosen but do not remove the nut completely. You’ll need a 1 and 1/16th socket for this. Back the nut off so that it is flush with the end of the steering column. Put a hammer on the nut and have a friend or someone you REALLY trust hit the hammer on the nut with another bigger hammer. As the hammer hits the other hammer, pull on the steering wheel with your arms and thighs towards you. How much hammer bashing will be required will vary but eventually the steering wheel should come loose.
Below you can watch a demo of the process, it should then make sense.
How To Video #
This just happens to be John’s first ever video! Steering Wheel Removal. Take a look to fully grasp this process.

I’ve built this website and spent time on the knowledge base to bring together a lot of information I have collected from around the internet. The intent is making it easy to find rather than having to know about and have skills with search engine query terms to get what you were looking for. Please make use of the knowledge base.
