LH Overdrive Thrust Washer Differences. The design of the thrust washer changed between the Black Label and Blue Label designs of the LH type overdrive.
Black Label Thrust Washer #
The Black Label thrust washer design is stronger and the washer is the entire width of the overdrive adapter unit. It’s also prevented from rotation by the use of a split pin. See the images below which show both sides within the overdrive adapter.
Blue Label Thrust Washer #
The later Blue Label overdrive has a far weaker design of thrust washer. Because of this, a Blue Label overdrive unit is very likely to have pieces of the trust washer that has broken inside. So, this is often found when you remove the filter cover and filter from the bottom of the unit. I haven’t worked yet with a Blue Label Overdrive that did NOT have a broken thrust washer
Solutions for Blue Label LH Overdrive Thrust Washer #
John Twist of University Motors Ltd. had a replacement thrust washer machined that he used. Alternatively, John Esposito of Quantum Mechanics had brought up a large number of remaining overdrive adapter units with an improved thrust washer. You may be able to purchase one from him.
